Burning Rate of Wood Cribs with Controlled Airflow

چکیده
Abstract There is a dire need to improve our prediction capabilities of wildland fire behavior in range conditions from marginal burning the most extreme. In order develop more physically-based operational model, we understanding effect ventilation on rate fuel beds. this work, wood cribs are used as simplified bed. A variety crib designs were tested with stick sizes ranging 0.32 cm 1.27 and porosities densely packed loosely packed. pressurized box was built that allowed for controlled flow air through 100 LPM 1000 LPM. The mass loss rates forced compared tests conducted outside under unrestricted quiescent conditions. For here, generally observed increase flow. amount naturally induced into while deduced be best related vent area square root spacing (A v s 1/2 ). It seen air-to-fuel ratio inside bed approximately 1.11, indicating over 75% required completely combust pyrolysis gases entrained plume. When supplied less than normally ambient burning, under-ventilated proportional reduction does not seem depend characteristics. over-ventilated, however, relative vary design. Simple physical arguments correlate data. Future work will include testing at higher rates, different moisture contents, multiple thicknesses.

BACKGROUND Acute lower respiratory illnesses (ALRI) have been associated with exposure to domestic smoke. To examine further this association, a case-control study was conducted among Navajo children seen at the Public Health Service Indian Hospital at Fort Defiance, AZ. METHODS Cases, children hospitalized with an ALRI (n = 45), were ascertained from the inpatient logs during October, 1992, ...
